Yes, the leagues should have their own rules, and punishments (including fines and bans from games) for violations. Taking steroids for improving athletic performance is cheating, and should be treated by the leagues as cheating. And, if supplements are being used to sidestep this, the leagues should address the problem. If a supplement manufacturer is fraudulently putting steroids into supplements, this should be addressed as fraud and the manufacturer sued (among other sanctions) for this fraud. However, regulating my access to vitamins is not going to do a thing against professional athletes cheating. I have taken vitamins and minerals since college, with a 4-year break, and only had good results from my vitamins. While off the vitamins, I got noticeably more (and worse) colds and flus than while I was taking the vitamins. And I currently take supplements that help protect the liver (steroids actually ruin the liver). Taking these supplements off the market will not address the problem of athletes cheating in their games--they will just get their steroids illegally, while everyone else will be missing work and getting sick more often. Reporting even minor incidents and pulling supplements off the market for these incidents makes no sense. Some supplements carry minor incidents as signs that they are working--cleanses always cause possible diarrhea and flu-like symptoms for at least a short time. Also, someone might take a vitamin at the wrong time and be sleepy during the day or awake all night (which simply taking them at a different time would solve the problem). Vitamin pills also carry some risk of minor upset stomach--any pill of the same size carries the exact same risk, because it's the pill itself and not the contents that are responsible. As for dying from taking vitamins, I feel the greatest risk of dying or serious injury comes from choking on the pill--exactly the same risk a drug pill of the same size and shape carries. Very few actually die from supplements, and most of those misused the supplements (Ephedra, taken before a hot workout, or in patients with very high blood pressure, aggravated the problems). Unlike the double- or triple-digit numbers of deaths from supplements in decades, I have heard various reports of six- and seven figure annual deaths from properly prescribed, properly administered prescription and non-prescription drugs. Depending on how the numbers are viewed, anywhere from 150,000 to 850,000 people die a year just from properly prescribed, properly administered prescription drugs. And that's on top of inappropriately prescribed drugs (Michael Jackson, anyone?), errors in filling the prescription, mistakes in taking too many or the wrong drugs, or intentionally taking the whole bottle. Yet I do not see any "drug safety" act being passed to ban prescription drugs. And I do not believe that hogwash about people dying from not getting appropriate medical care.
