I am an herbalist and own a retail herb store in Morro Bay, CA. In June I begin my 15th year in business. Obviously this would demolish my business. I haven’t heard anything from my herb distributors about the imminance of the enforcement of the codex in the US. I will have to just keep doing what I am doing for the sake of my clients and family & friends, until I can’t do it anymore and have to change my approach.
I think the US government agencies have been operating arrogantly for so long that anything short of a full citizens’ rebellion will have no effect. I find myself hoping that the earth will itself take action against Washington DC, but that is like hoping Jesus will come in the sky and rescue Christians from the consequences of their life style…

I have had experience with the FDA. My son needed an allergy treatment that my physician said would be very cost effective and that he had had good results with, but he could not do it for my son because the treatment was banned by the FDA, and the doctor didn’t know why. I am 100% opposed to Senator McCain’s bill. I have voted Republican in every election since 1976. But because of senators and politicians like Senator McCain, I may vote Democrat in the next election. I am on all natural medicine and am not on any prescription drugs, if this bill passed, it may contribute to my early death. Senator McCain, do your homework, and do what’s best for the health of this nation. Shame on you for being such a medical idiot. Natural medicine works. I have a degree in health and plan to become a physician in integrative medicine. This bill would be a total disaster for the health of this nation, and would only serve special interest groups who don’t have the health of Americans as their main concern, but are only interested in stuffing their pockets by mandating prescription drug coverage over alternative medicine. I’ve had my health ruined with prescription drugs, because the doctors who prescribed them to me didn’t know what they were doing. Why allow the FDA more control over our supplements, when it is obvious that they don’t have a clue over what is best for American’s health, especially in the area of primary care? The United States already lags behind many European countries in health care, especially in primary care (which, to me, is the most important medicine of all). If your stupid bill, passes, the United States will probably have an even higher mortality rate, with higher incidences of chronic illnesses (that are not fixed with conventional medicines). Your bill is disgusting and only serves the interest of medical idiots or medical criminals..

This bill is just a disguise to put another nail in the coffin of the dietary supplement industry for the sake if safety. Manufacturers who put steroids in dietary supplements are selling misbranded, adulterated products and there are already laws on the books to prosecute such companies. No further laws are required, just jail the perputrators. Every dietary supplement company that operates with integrity (which is 95% of th eindustry) would welcome this.

But what McCain is proposing would give the FDA gestapo type powers with such unrealistic regulations, it would virtually eliminate therapeutic supplements wipe out most quality supplement manufacturers. One has to wonder if this isn’t the real agenda. If McCain were really interested in protecting the American pepple, he would go after the pharmaceutical industry.These people kill more people a minute with their side-effect ridden toxic drugs than the dietary supplement industry has killed over the past 10 years. We need to maintain our freedom to purchase supplements to off-set their universal health care and mandatory vaccinations. Health care workers in this area were threatened with losing their jobs, and some did, if they did not take both the seasonal and H1N1 flu shots. Within the military this was the first year the seasonal flu shot was mandatory and of course the H1N1. We need the supplements and herbals to treat the side affects; cancers and auto-immune disorders, from vaccines.

Please vote against this bill. There is absolutely no authentic factual support for it. What the American public needs is more stringent standards for the purity of our food supply and the safety of drugs that are released to the public.

Watch out for the sneaky legislative trick to use a minor piece of the entire new falacious bill to represent the bulk of the document. For example, “Public Health Preservation Rule” would parade the ideal of “Free Bandaids For All,” but in fine print hidden somewhere, it will also read, “You are no longer allowed ownership of private property.” Alternately, there are dozens of totally unrelated tyrannical dictations such as “bananas are now prescription drugs,” “you are no longer allowed to drink orange juice,” under some benevolent title such as “Democratic Freedom Act.” This is to try to trick you outright. They tried such a thing in Massachusetts, to pass an absurd bill that enforced military dictatorship and property theft under the guise of swine flu pandemic. (It fortunately failed.)

Yes, Senator McCain needs to step down from his Senate seat. After serving in vietnam & supposedly fight for freedom of the South vietnamese, he certainly did not learn anything from it except how to be a better Socialist by controlling the people’s freedoms. Just because a few (6) NFL players used banned substances and got caught or some athletes died from steroids or Ephedrine does not give anyone the right to punish an entire industry! Punish the players as they knew exactly what they were doing. Punish the companies that placed Ephedrine in their product with out placing a warning notice on their label. But the entire industry? This is not only stupidity, but it smacks of just more control. Then you wonder why States are moving towards nullification of certain Congressional regulations.
There are just a few Nutritional Supplement manufacturers who choose to follow FDA regulation for manufacturing as well as the purity & potency of their product(s). We are fortunate to be associated with one of those companies & they will quite possibly not be affected by this new reg. But that is exactly what it should be, the choice of the manufacturer. If a manufacturer wishes to make an inferior product, then they will be found out & lose business. Those that make a superior product will gain business. It’s like eating at a restaurant, if they have bad food they will soon go out of business. That’s what it is all about CHOICE!!!!!!!!

Our forefathers never intended for us to have a top heavy federal government that dictated how we were allowed to address our private health issues. McCain’s bill is another wolf in sheep’s clothing which is worded to make sense on the surface but will actually work to limit our access to supplements and work in favor of the Big Pharma companies who brook no competition in the marketplace they believe they have exclusive rights to: our bodies.

It is rediculous to even think about further restrictions against supplements when our mainstream drugs are so poorly formulated and regulated that their side effects cause over 140,000 deaths each year in homes and hospitals in the U.S. alone even when properly prescribed and administered – while one is hard pressed to find even a handful of deaths attributed to supplements. Clearly there is no compelling need here. Just more greed.

The line has to be drawn: no FDA authority over supplements. Allopathic medicine, big pharma are big business and have nothing to do with healing. They “treat” to keep the profits rolling in, which consequences are very often detrimental, even disastrous. Natural medicine is our only hope of good health in the long run, and an absolute right to exercise this prerogative over our own bodies.

My husband is 78 and I am 77. We are in good health because of Pharmacy grade herbs and vitamins. We have been taking them for many years plus meditation, good diet and exercise. If the Obama Medical bill passes there will be one less HOPE for all the older people that are still in good Health and Happy. I know that the average number of prescriptions for people our ages are 10 or more each month. And those prescriptions are causing alot of bad problems with our older people. John McCain….Keep you hands off the herb and vitamin businesses….except the very bad ones and the FDA can not even do that. There are alot of very good companies Making pills made from herbs and vitamins.

It amazes me that Republicans and others oppose big gov’t control when it comes to controls for Big Finance, Gov’t Spending, or even Public Options for Health Care but when it comes down to how we take care of our health including the types of seeds we can plant and our right to choose they want control Big Govt control.

i can not put in words how upset i am over what john mccain is purposing to put into law!!!!!!!!!! how many people have DIED from vitimins,herbs,supplements, etc. ??????? somebody give me an answer. i don’t know of any one. i know of 4 that i can think of who has DIED from legal and illegal drugs!! i wrote to senators etc. before , a few years ago so i guess i’ll have to do it again. as of yet i haven’t gotten anything in the mail, or heard from the places i order supplements etc. from, so i’ll wait?? anyway when a lot of people hear about this ,hopefully we’ll get this stopped before it’s too late!!!!!!

Check the records. How many have died in the past year from taking supplements, even those who grossly abuse them – vs. over 100,000 every year who die from taking prescription drugs at the recommended dose. That’s equivalent to one airliner crash PER WEEK! The airlines would be shut down by the third week at that rate – so why not shut down the drug companies?

Back in the early 2000’s I knocked out the flu, two years in a row, in less than 24 hours, with nothing but massive doses of vitamin C. And this was after it had set in and I was bed ridden both times. And the amazing thing about it, next day I felt as if I hadn’t even been sick, it usually takes a month to fully recover.

For the past 8 years I’ve been taking my vitamins daily (not the wimpy stuff you get at the local pharmacy) – and I haven’t had so much as a cold since.

Mr. McCain, FDA, Pelosi – leave my supplements alone!

If this is about anti-doping then address THAT problem and don’t take broad sweeping measures that affect other very viable and necessary solutions for others. And how about focusing that energy on Arizona’s economy, unemployment rate, border issues and health care? COME ON!!!

I think you are mistaken about at least one key issue:
The FDA does not exist to guard and promote our health but to create a monopoly on items that people want in order to enrich the favored.
So having the FDA do it’s job won’t help much; this IS it’s job. Government employees can see how much money folks spend on their health and they covet it.
Now think for a minute about how many people are being killed by vitamins, minerals and protein being self administered without FDA regulation and contrast with the number of people being killed by the drugs deemed safe and pushed on us by the FDA. The real solution here is to abolish the FDA.

What a horrible mess we’re in these days. You can’t trust the damns or the republicans. Why do these politicians think that they have to make decisions for us??? I use supplements and my friends don’t. I don’t get in their business and they don’t get in mine. Thank goodness for choice! I’m calling my senator tomorrow. I lived in Phoenix for several years. McCain was not popular there at the time and he is going to be less popular now! I think we should vote all incumbants out of office! If I hear that these highly paid career politicians are public servants one more time I’ll scream.

Political dollars talk so McCain gets the FDA to go after one of the few healthy options we as a people have. We cannot allow McCain to put more restraints on us and power up his party and the FDA because we will be paying for their supplement supervision and it will be their restricted version of what supplements are necessary – without the professional wisdom of physicians who base their practices on healing with these supplements.

As a naturopathic medicine student, I am learning how to restore the basis for health to my patients using natural means first. A crucial and essential part of that goal is the use of dietary supplements in additon to herbal medicine and good nutrition. The changes to DSHEA that Senator McCain is proposing might severely limit my ability (and other N.D.s) to effectively do my job. My future patients, and the rest of the US population deserve access to natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals. I am not saying that pharmaceuticals and Wester medicine do not have their place, but people that consciously choose another more natural alternative ought not to have their choice yanked out from underneath them. Please contact your senators and urge them not to support John McCain’s ammendment to DSHEA.

In the late ’80’s and early ’90’s we took action against the regulation of dietary suppliments and herbs that was said to have more voices behind it that those against the Vietnam War. Our efforts resulted in Orrin Hatch’s DSHEA and it’s passing in 1994. All suppliments and herbs currently in use were ‘grandfathered’ in as FOOD. This would stand as long as there were no attempts to call these ‘medicines’ or make medicinal claims. Tighten up folks if we want to be taken seriously and lets speak out clearly on this again. Get involved in your passion and profession politically to keep it safe, legal and accessible!

for their benefit. This is their MAIN goal in office. They ALL believe we are really DUMB and will
listen to their campaign lies. So, the end result is this, “We MUST BE TRULY DUMB because we keep voting them back into office to continue doing the same things. Lying, cheating, sucking in all the funds they can to become extremely wealthy and not, at all, being concerned about all of us DUMB people who keeps them in office. You can be rest assured, McCain is on the payroll of the Pharmecutical giants, “BIG-TIME!” We have the most corrupt government, from the very top to the very bottom, that has ever existed. FYI: This includes City, County, State and Federal offices.
It will be interesting how the millions of Seniors living in AZ,, who rely on their supplements, vote the next time.

The Federal government has more power than our for-father’s ever intended! 1st the patriot act & now this cash cow!! How much of a % are they offering you?
