The problem isn’t small farms and raw milk. The problem is the large scale industrial over milking of cows, that produces diseased sickly cows, that get the ying-yang milked out of them. Now if these ‘”large scale industrial milkers” start selling raw milk that’s a problem. So the FDA decided the ban raw milk across the board, instead of just banning instead of just banning “large industrial milkers” from selling the sickly raw milk, from the sick cow they over milk. It’s a sad situation but the FDA is just protecting it’s assets it have with the big milking industry. So the little farmer becomes the “scape-goat” of inforcing the ban. What the FDA needs to do instead of banning raw milk, is to inspect, and regulate the standards for the quality of the raw milk, so it is perfectly safe and healthy, for public consumption.

here in GA sale of raw milk for human consumption is illegal. You can buy it for pet use. I’ve researched places here that sell it and it seems to me that if the farm has good sanitary practices and is organic and the cows are grass fed; that it would be healthy and safe.

I am allergic to store boughten milk. So is one of my daughters. We get severe diarrhea and stomach cramps as well as hives when we dring store milk but we both can tolerate raw milk. Not only that it tastes better “real”.

So, c graf, which big industry do you work for that is keeping completely safe raw milk off the shelves and away from those who know of its health benefits? You obviously must be either working for one or are just ignorant of the political and big money reasons for keeping freedom of choice away from the general public. Not to mention the health benefits of drinking the stuff straight from the cow (ever heard of the blood-brain barrier? Thought not). As to Louis Pasteur, the man apologized for introducing the process that bears his name on his death bed. He had discovered upon further research that pasterization wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Other problems existed. Oh, that is a generally unknown factoid conveniently hushed by the media. Too bad.

As to the safety of raw milk, when i purchased the last gallon of raw milk that I was legally allowed to purchase in my liberal state of Oregon. I took six months to consume that last gallon of milk. Of course I love buttermilk and that is what the raw milk turned into, thanks to the natural, protective enzymes that are a natural part of the stuff. I challenge you or anyone else to make any pasteurized product last that long and still be in a consumable state. Pasterized milk ROTS. Raw milk turns into buttermild and is self preserving. Hmm. Oh, have you ever tried buttermilk pancakes for breakfast? Good stuff!

There is nothing in the constitution to deny people raw milk or cheese, nor any other natural food. The FDA should not be making regulations to keep a person from ingesting any food or food product. It should only regulate cleanliness and ensure that no unwanted or dangerous additives get in to our food. Let natural foods prevail unhindered by so-called science. This brings me to the fluoride debate, but don’t get me started.

I’d support an independent testing protocol that would eliminate pathogens and toxic substances. No reason to have otherwise healthy cows and humans being fed environmental pollutants or pathogens. If testing is warranted, lets make it realistically comprehensive and keep it independent. Consumer oversight is far more effective that if done by government.

I Joined the raw milk underground about five years ago. You couldn’t pay me to go back to super market milk products. My 85 year old father loves the milk and butter and can go through a quart in a couple of days. Luckily we have a reasonably priced source from an Amish farmer. We love the rich silky texture, and sweet full taste. Raw milk must come from cows on pasture to be safe. Our milk keeps about 12 days then sours beautifully, We always have some sour milk and cream for baking and sauces, and I frequently make yogurt. I also save the whey from sour milk for pickling, dressings, beverages, etc per Weston Price guidelines.
My Dad often comes down with stomach “bugs” when he takes a long visit with my sister who is devoted to a low fat, almost vegetarian diet. Someone is always sick at her house, yet she believes that they are “eating healthy.” At my house we are never sick, and I teach in elementary schools where I am exposed to lots of virus’s etc.. I’m convinced that raw dairy has improved my immune system and given me vitality. I also think my “good fat” diet helped me sail through menopause without problems and keeps my metabolism balanced. I could go on, but I’m just glad to see that word is getting out. We must fight to make real milk and dairy products widely available. It could save the country!

I grew up in a rural area in South Dakota. Graduated from H S in 1958. Most of my classmates grew up on raw milk and locally raised produce. At our 50th class reunion, all still very healthy. I wonder if this small group is a basis for the support of raw milk. Keep up the good work in this effort.

The practice of pasteurization began in order to mask health-producing problems with inferior quality milk. Raw milk is a sign of confidence in the health of their animals and milk, on the farmer’s part. And good quality raw milk keeps very well, whereas inferior quality milk spoils rapidly. I have seen this in concrete fact, having grown up drinking raw and pasteurized milk, each alike. We found that the stuff in the carton went bad rapidly but the raw milk kept beautifully, especially if stored in earthenware for some reason. And in earthenware, we would make our own raw milk yogurt and cheese, and when made in the earthenware it has a whole other flavor than in other materials. Dont ask me why, but there it is.

I’ve been drinking raw milk for a year now with no ill effects. You do have to look into the source though. I’d never drink raw milk from a factor farm. If you HAVE to give the cows antibiotics then I can’t imagine what’s in the milk they produce, so yeah, burn / pasteurize that milk. Cows that are healthy, get sunshine, freedom to roam, sit and chew their cud are cows I’d rather drink milk from. It’s worth keeping in mind pasteurization only became necessary a century ago with unsanitary living conditions for cows, for thousands of years before that people drink raw milk.

As far as Louis Pasteur, he died long befor milk began to be subjected to pasteurization. You might find the book, The Untold Story of Milk quite enlightening on all these points and more. And by the way, if you wouldn’t drink raw milk even if payed, how would you know how it tastes? It is quite delicious! And healthy, and safe.And you are correct when you claim it’s all politics and I’ll add money. Instead of taking the party line without question as you clearly are, do some research before accusing those of us who choose natural over processed of mental illness. PASTEURIZED milk has been the source of many widespread outbreaks. A total for some of the documented outbreaks due to PASTEURIZED milk over the past few decades is 239,884 cases and 620 deaths.

The nation’s largest recorded outbreak of Salmonella was due to PASTEURIZED milk contaminated with antibiotic-resistant Salmonella typhimurium. The outbreak, which occurred between June 1984 and April 1985 sickened over 200,000 and caused 18 deaths. Disturbingly, the CDC did not issue a specific Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report for this outbreak; information must be gleaned from other reports published in the FDA Consumer and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

A 2004 outbreak in Pennsylvania and New Jersey involved multidrug-resistant Salmonella typhimurium infection from milk contaminated after pasteurization.
Despite numerous outbreaks due to pasteurized milk, neither the FDA nor the CDC has ever issued a warning against consuming pasteurized milk. Pasteurization is not a guarantee; pasteurized milk is not sterile. The FDA permits the presence of up to 20,000 bacteria /ml and 10 E.coli/ml in milk after the pasteurization process has been completed.
Because pasteurization destroys probiotics (good bacteria), any harmful bacteria present in the milk after pasteurization can and will flourish. On the other hand, published research shows that good bacteria and many other components in raw milk actually destroy pathogens added to the milk.

I have been drinking raw milk from a certified farm for close to 2 years. Once I started drinking it, I realized quickly that one cannot compare it to the “milk” found in a grocery store. The taste of raw milk is far superior to that found in a store, and I believe it has numerous health benefits, as well. (ex. I had problems with eczema for over 6 years, but once I started drinking raw milk it went away!) I even drank raw milk while I was pregnant, and now have a very healthy baby boy. When we are done with nursing, he will drink raw milk, too. Please do not slam raw milk until you have tried it and researched it thoroughly.

I understand why Whole Foods stopped selling raw milk — they were scared but their fear is ridiculous and unfounded. Raw milk is so much healthier than pasteurized milk. Raw milk farmers do many more checks on their cows than the farmers who sell pasteurized milk do — so things like Brucella are screened for and taken care of. It’s been a great scapegoat because the pasteurized milk lobby in this country is so darn high that raw milk is blamed for getting people sick. More often than not it’s something else that people have been eating that have made them sick.

If you do some research, you will see US cattle are tested for Brucellosis, which does occur in foreign countries, is associated with foreign travel, and is not usually attributed to raw milk, as the same group people (in a foreign country) drink the same milk and do not all get Brucellosis. Brucellosis is also more associated with the swine industry.

I raised all six of my children on Altadena Certified raw milk, cheese and butter. My youngest was allergic to pasteurized, homogenized milk by had no problem with the raw. The Great state of Montana should follow Wisconsin in legalizing its sale and not take the will of the large milk producers who find it too difficult to raise diseased free cows.

Brucella is a very serious disease that can be contracted from sick cows through raw milk. I see nothing in this article that mentions the danger people, and particularly children, face from drinking raw milk from infected cows. This disease is not uncommon in Mexico, for example, because they have no requirements to pasteurize milk. The fact that there are only about 200 cases a year (per the CDC) of brucella in the US is because most milk is pasteurized. The danger is that if someone contracts brucella, no one will recognize the symptoms, not even doctors, because they have little or no experience with this disease since it is so rare in this country, and so it may go untreated, or be treated improperly. As more people want to drink raw milk, there will be more cases of brucella, possibly not being recognized as such. This is a disease that is a general feeder, and can cause blindness, mental retardation, heart disease, arthritic inflammation, etc.

I would feel more confident about the raw milk idea if people were aware of this associated disease. Certainly, if one wants to drink milk, it should be as nutritious as possible, therefore should be raw. But in all the literature and commentary on this issue, I see no mention of the dangers of this disease. I therefore must assume that those promoting this idea are unaware of it, which is a dangerous situation for everyone, particularly children.

I agree that raw milk is more nutritious, but if we are going to drink raw milk, we need to be sure the cows are regularly screened for brucella and other diseases. Personally, I don’t think that cow’s milk is what human children ought to be drinking because it’s not in the natural order of things to cross mammalian species lines where milk is concerned, and I think it can lead to undesirable results, like premature hardening of the arteries for example. Cow’s milk is not even close in comparison to human milk.

I would suggest that those writing articles like the one above examine their premises more carefully and research the brucella question.

So what else is new? The large dairies do not want the public to know the facts or benefits of raw grass fed whole milk and cheeses and so they pressure the FDA. The FDA often lets politics get in the way of facts. It appears that more people get sick every year from pasteurized milk than from raw. One day I hope to live in a free country.

I am 77 years old. I grew up drinking raw milk and I only bought raw milk for my children. We never had any problems.
The milk sold today is no longer milk. It has little nutritional value, since it is dead food. The reason
that the dairy industry insist on pasteurizing milk is because they can mix old milk with fresh milk and add water and nobody will know.
I recently bought some “Organic” heavy cream from Lucerne Foods, Inc., 1-877-232-4271. It tasted so awful that I could not use it. The ingredients were: “organic GradeA cream (milk) and carrageenan!”
I never drink milk anymore. It is no longer fit for human consumption!

I appreciate all of the things you do. I would suggest, however, that you dive deeper into the dairy universe before putting so much energy into touting dairy of ANY kind…I’d suggest that you read The China Study, which summarizes the research pointing toward Casein (major dairy protein) as a cancer promoter, and dairy on the whole seems more and more likely to be a significant cause of Type 1 Diabetes and perhaps also a whole range of (related?) auto-immune diseases. I’d also suggest you read the works of Robert Cohen (the NOT Milk man), including Dairy A to Z, which simply cites the science linking dairy consumption to a wide range of health concerns. Another key concern is the presence of IFG-1, a hormone found in cow’s milk which is identical to the same hormone fund in humans, a powerful growth hormone, and also implicated as a cancer promoter. Both of these gentlemen base their writings on science based work which questions the essential health benefits of any dairy BEFORE it hits the pasteurization/homogenization process.

YES, WE KEEP FIGHTING THIS ISSUE OVER AND OVER, AGAIN AND LOOSING TO THE FALSE BELIEF OUT THERE OR PUSHED BY THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOSCIATION AS UNHEALTHY PROBIOTIC BACTERIA COMING OUT OF RAW COWS AND GOATS MILK…..I FIND IT FUNNY BECAUSE GOAT MILK IS AN ALTERNATIVE TO LACTOSE INTOLERANT PEOPLE. MANY SMALL FARMERS GET UP EARLY IN THE MORING TO HAND MILK GOATS AND GET IT DELIVERED TO AN INFANT WHO REALLY NEEDS IT AND GUESS WHAT THOSE INFANTS ARE THRIVING BECAUSE OF HEALTHY BACTERIA IN THEIR SYSTEMS.
I DO HAVE A BRAIN THAT IS WELL FED BECAUSE OF MY RESEARCH REGARDING WHAT I PUT INTO MY BODY AND MY CHILDREN’S BODIES FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH.
WHAT IS A SHAME IS THAT WE REALLY KNOW CONSUMER PROTECTION IS ONLY FOR MAKING BIG PHARMA RICHER AND RICHER…..LEAVE THE LITTLE GUY ALONE. AND HIS TRULY HAPPY COWS AND GOATS.

Raw milk is not the culprit it has been portrayed to be. It is far more healthy than pasteurized.

Raw milk sales should be legalized in all 50 states and around the world for that matter. Of course, it all comes down to money and raw milk has a much shorter shelf life than paseurized milk. Still people should have the right to choose which type of milk that will buy.

I guess I’m the one that denies raw milk tastes good. The day I first tried it was the day I quit drinking milk and I was just a kid. I’m now a senior and still won’t drink it – use it on cereal only and as little as possible. I do like natural things but raw mild isn’t one of them on the list.

Do a math check: 800 cases divided by 12 years = 67.

Do a usage check: lightening is what you do to coffee or heavy loads. Lightning comes out of the sky.

Neither one of these are reasons to refute your point, which people long before Adelle Davis have been trying to pound into people’s heads since shortly after the laws requiring the pasteurization of milk were enacted. For most people whose systems tolerate milk, the nutritional value of unpasteurized, unhomogenized, undiluted, organic dairy products far exceeds that of processed milk (at least, this was true before the advent of industrial lot raised cows, massive doses of antibiotics in GMO corn and soy feed).

If milk were, in fact, “nature’s most perfect food,” who in their right minds could argue that we have to do all these things to it before we can safely consume it?

I love milk and all milk products. Yet, because I have no source for raw milk, I almost never indulge anymore. I do eat free range buffalo, chicken, venison, elk and local beef from ranchers whose ranges I can drive to in an hour. Unfortunately, SW NM is big on beef cattle, dairy not so much so.

As a veterinarian who also has a BS in Animal Science, I have a certain amount of knowledge of all sides of this issue, although I am not a dairy practitioner.

My suggestion would be to create a new industry of independent food and milk safety testing companies. Let the Federal and State government closely regulate these testers instead of themselves inspecting food production establishments. As we know – current inspections are inadequate. But a science-based, well regulated industry of safety testing might be able to fill in the gaps. Then – remove all the regulations forbidding farmers and dairies from selling to consumers and local markets. Let the buyer inspect the safety certificates and buy with the assurance that the product is safe. If the producer is regularly monitored, then the producer has strong incentive to apply cleanliness and sanitation measures at all stages of production, thus ensuring safer products. Let them sell to individuals and/or local markets. The buyer would have the opportunity to check the safety certifications and buy with confidence. It is NOT rocket science to produce clean and safe farm and dairy products. Prices to the consumer might vary quite a bit – and reflect more accurately the extra care required to ensure a healthy product. We would keep more small family farmers in business and create a demand for locally produced products. In turn, this would reduce wasteful (in terms of oil) long distance transportation of food and counter-productive subsidies to crops such as corn. In the interest of brevity, I’ll stop here….

I HAVE CONSUMED RAW MILK ALL MY LIFE, AND I SEE NO HARM IN IT. I AM 51 YEARS OLD AND CAN STILL KEEP UP WITH MOST OF THE CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN, PLUS I HAVE BEEN TOLD I LOOK YOUNGER THAN I AM. RAW MILK IS BASICALLY HARMLESS, I AM LIVING PROOF, HAVING NO CANCER, ETC AND ON NO DRUGS WHATSOEVER! I THINK THE BILL SHOULD BE REINTRODUCED, AND BEFORE YOU CONDEMN SOMETHING, HAVE THE DECENCY TO TRY IT FIRST!

Growing up in the 1930’s & 1940’s we always use raw milk from the cows we milked. For the 22 years I lived at home we never had any problem with the raw milk.

As long is hygiene is required for any process in the food industry thier is no threat of contamination. Everyone knows that raw food period is healthier. Milk heated to very high tempertures is so depleted of any health benefits that it seems criminal to tamper with natures bounty. I question the intentions of the FDA. Is it economy or ecology they are supporting? In the ultimate understanding when the ecology, that is the healthiest food is promoted then the economy grows from a solid foundation.

Since the ridiculousness of government control over food and health has gone too far in prohibiting raw milk – which is the ONLY healthy milk – from being available for purchase, we have gone to our friends, who own a small farm, to buy their raw milk. And they don’t kill their cows (or bulls, or steers) when they can no longer produce, just like my family will not kill me when I am too old to serve them.

RAW MILK? Are you nuts? Who has died from drinking pasteurized milk? Who was Louis Pasteur? Was he just wasting his time? Wisconsin is the same place that wouldn’t let us have colored margarine for years. It’s all political. You couldn’t pay me to drink raw milk and I doubt it tastes delicious.

Leave our farmers alone. We want raw milk, not that watered down stuff that has no nutrients in it. Tell the FDA to get a life. Lets compare the problems with raw mile to the death rate of medical mistakes. Shall we ban all western medicine?? Hmmm?
