Short Telomeres Linked with Increased Mortality Risk Over Six-Year Period

A study published in the Journal of Gerontology: Biological and Medical Sciences found an association between shorter telomere length and an increased risk of dying over 6.1 years of follow-up.  Telomeres are an extremity of a chromosome found in DNA and researchers believe that they are shortened by long-term response to oxidative stress and inflammation which is known to be enhanced by exposure to infectious and inflammatory diseases.
