Research confirms butterbur efficiency against allergies

Butterburs, and coltsfoots, are the colloquial name for petasites, a genus of flowering plants in the sunflower family that have been shown to reduce smooth muscle spasms and to possess anti-inflammatory properties. They have been used as a cure for pain, inflammation, and skin sores in various traditional medicines, including Greek and Native American. Preliminary results from recent studies indicate that butterbur may also be an effective treatment option for people suffering from seasonal allergies.

Researchers hope to prove that butterbur may be as effective in treating allergies as antihistamine drugs but without any of the chemically induced side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness and gastrointestinal problems.
