Q: I just found out I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). I go from diarrhea to constipation and it’s been happening for the last month. It’s hard to leave the house!
My doctor said to take Imodium when it happens, but I don’t want to live like that. Any suggestions?
A: Unfortunately, Imodium is only taking care of the symptom of diarrhea—not the cause of your IBS.
The prevalence of IBS has increased dramatically over the last decade. There can be many causes of IBS. Here are just a few:
Candida overgrowth: Poor diet, stress and use of antibiotics causes the overgrowth of candida in the gut. Candida normally resides in the GI tract but it’s the overgrowth that’s problematic. Often gas, bloating, and alternating diarrhea with constipation are the main symptoms.
Antibiotics also wipe out beneficial bacteria which is part of our microbiome. Probiotics are necessary to reinoculate the gut with good bacteria during and after the use of antibiotics. A qualified practitioner can advise you on their best use for your personal situation.
Dysbiosis/SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth): Antibiotic use can cause further dysbiosis in the gut but more and more people are being diagnosed with acid reflux (GERD) and put on acid blockers and inhibitors such as Prilosec, Nexium and Dexilant. These drugs are only intended for short term use (a few weeks) but doctors are increasingly putting their patients on them indefinitely to manage their GERD.
The long term use of these drugs causes pH changes farther down in the gut that favor the growth of undesirable bacteria. Once they flourish they can populate the large intestine and cause symptoms of IBS.
Food allergies/intolerances: Eating foods that you’re allergic to or otherwise intolerant of can cause your gut to be “irritable.” Proper testing and elimination of problematic foods will bring much relief to those suffering with IBS.
Your best bet is to go to an integrative practitioner who can search for the root cause of your IBS so you can cure it with the right therapies. You can listen to an in-depth Intelligent Medicine podcast with Dr. Hoffman about IBS here.
To your health!

The thyroid gland is called the “Master Gland” because it controls so many body functions. When it does not function well, it affects us mentally and physically, as it is responsible for regulating body temperatures, energy levels, and the heart. Even our hair, nails and skin is regulated by this amazing gland! It is for these reasons that it is important to monitor the thyroid for the early detection of disease or health problems in the rest of the body. If you see any abnormalities or changes in the areas mentioned, do go to your doctor to get your thyroid checked out. For example, are you the one in the room who gets too hot or too cold? Brittle nails? Hair falling out? Skin either dry or clammy? Fatigued? These may all be signs that your thyroid is functioning poorly. Do keep in mind what I alerted you to last month – look closely at those lab results. What most labs report as a “normal” functioning level for the thyroid, may be off by 25%. (FYI: I keep my patients’ T3 levels between 3.5 and 3.8).
This month, we move on to correcting a thyroid problem. There are a number of thyroid nutritional therapies to try before resorting to a prescription for Synthroid, a common thyroid medication. First of all, we check to make sure your adrenal glands are functioning well. This is done by checking DHEA and Cortisol levels. If the adrenals don’t work well, the brain will not be able to signal the thyroid to produce thyroid hormone. To help the brain better communicate with the thyroid, add Tyrosine 500mg, twice a day.
Next we look at iodine and selenium levels. The thyroid makes a chemical, T4, which is then converted to T3, which is the active thyroid hormone. Iodine and Selenium is needed to accomplish this. We add a vitamin/mineral complex, along with B-Complex, to supply the necessary nutritionals to allow the thyroid gland to function. The thyroid needs small amounts of vitamins and minerals to make T4 and T3 and B-Complex. If the patient has an over-active thyroid (Hyperthyroid), it is recommended that they take iodine, mineral complex, B-complex and that they add Carnitine 2-4g daily, because this amino acid makes the body less sensitive to both T3 and T4.
To illustrate, I had a patient diagnosed with an over-functioning thyroid. Her doctor had placed her on drug to reduce her symptoms and reduce the thyroid production of thyroid hormone. By the time I saw her, she still had to take the drug for several more weeks. Unfortunately, the side effects of the drug were so great, she was in physical distress and extremely discouraged. I put her on 3 grams of Carnitine for 3 days. In 3 days, her levels stabilized. She stopped taking her prescription medication. Besides getting her levels close to normal, physically she felt great! Her rapid recovery is a-typical. Most patients see an improvement in 1-2 weeks.
If the patient has a thyroid that is under functioning (Hypothyroid) and they have tried different nutritional therapies, their next option is to take prescription medication. Synthroid is a synthetic T4. I don’t use this much because most of my patients want a more natural treatment and you still have to hope the body turns the T4 into T3. An alternative prescription thyroid drug is called Armour Thyroid which is a combination of T4 and T3. This medication is made from pork. The compound pharmacist can make a T4/T3 combination from goose feathers.
There are may options and opinions when it comes to the thyroid gland. Your doctor will best help you navigate your options.

The post By John Young, MD: Correcting the master gland first appeared on Alliance for Natural Health USA - Protecting Natural Health.

If you listen to AM radio, it’s likely you’re continually assailed with ads that claim that you can lose “25-40 pounds in 40 days.” There’s not even a qualifier that this is a best-case scenario like “Results may vary” or the disclaimer “Weight loss may not be typical” (which I thought the Federal Trade Commission used to insist accompany these kinds of pitches).
These incredible successes are said to be achievable with “No shots, no hormones, no surgery.” The advertisers aver that they’re “contractually obligated” to refund your money if you don’t lose all that weight.
What’s the secret sauce, I wonder? The promoters don’t disclose it, but they claim their methods “burn toxic fat” and somehow eliminate your unique personal roadblocks to metabolic efficiency.
They say they use “DNA testing” and some way of pinpointing which of your organs are malfunctioning to individualize your program.
One claim is that a saliva sample of DNA will help match you to your optimal diet. That’s the basis for the emerging science of “nutrigenomics,” but a recent study showed that genetic analysis provided no useful prediction about whether subjects would do better on a low-carb vs. a low-fat diet. Someday the technique may be refined, but I’ve thoroughly field-tested DNA analysis and I’ve concluded that, in its present form, it offers scant useful insights on what or how my patients should be eating.
I’ll confess I have NO idea what the diet centers’ “black box” approach entails. They don’t precisely disclose it. But I do know from talking to patients who’ve participated that it involves a very low calorie diet—as low as 500-600 calories per day.
They say their program is “medically supervised,” but I could find no evidence that they have any health professionals other than a chiropractor on staff. Maybe I’m missing something?
What are the risks of such rapid weight loss?

Gallstones, which occur in 12-15% of patients who lose large amounts of weight rapidly

Headaches

Irritability and depression

Fatigue

Constipation

Hair loss

Muscle wasting

Dizziness

Menstrual irregularities

Nutritional deficiencies

Heart problems

The latter are particularly disquieting. A recent study revealed that while body fat stores are depleted, paradoxical fat accumulation affects the heart during very low calorie dieting. This was associated with a deterioration in heart function, including the heart’s ability to pump blood. This, along with electrolyte imbalances, might be particularly dangerous for individuals who, by virtue of their obesity, may already be highly predisposed to heart problems.
The good news is that if you survive an eight-week adjustment period, heart function improves, and the circulatory system benefits from reduced weight, lowered lipids, and enhanced insulin sensitivity.
With rapid weight loss, it’s almost impossible to completely spare muscle mass; claims to the contrary that one or the other weight loss scheme uniquely preserves muscle while exclusively burning fat are illusory. Only slow, gradual weight loss supported with resistance training can make it less likely that the dieter will cannibalize their own muscle tissue.
The example of the “Biggest Losers” is instructive. A study was done of contestants after their remarkable diet successes on the program, some achieving 3-digit weight losses with draconian caloric restriction and punishing exercise regimens. All but one or two had regained all the weight that they had lost—and then some. Why was it so difficult for them to maintain their target weight?
National Institutes of Health researchers decided to intensively study these contestants. In a now-famous paper entitled “Persistent metabolic adaptation 6 years after ‘The Biggest Loser’ competition,” scientists discovered that participants had undergone extreme “metabolic adaptation”: their resting metabolic rates—the amount of calories they burned without exertion—had plummeted. This is part of the body’s perverse but evolutionarily-sound adaptation to starvation. When faced with extinction, the body goes into severe conservation mode.
After decades guiding people on weight optimization programs, I’ve concluded that there’s no short-cut around this law of nature. The only way to achieve permanent, sustainable weight loss is via slow gradual weight loss, around 2-4 pounds per month, over a period of 18-36 months.
It’s difficult to sustain because the results aren’t as dramatic, and motivation wanes when you’re looking for a quick fix for your weight woes. Like most things worth doing, it takes time and determination. Holding out the prospect of losing 25-40 pounds in 40 days just doubles down on the duplicity that perpetuates yo-yo dieting.
And we know that losing weight, then regaining it, is worse even than sustained overweight. Yo-yo dieting is associated with a myriad of health woes. It results in a net loss of muscle, which is easily replaced with fat, leading to a higher risk of fatty liver, diabetes and heart disease; worst of all, it discourages dieters from undertaking more permanent, constructive efforts at weight optimization.
There are plenty of better ways to lose weight. Among the more promising:

Whole30®️ Diet: I undertook the Whole30 paleo-style diet two and a half years ago as an experiment to improve my energy, focus and athletic performance. While not even intending to, I lost 8-10 pounds of body fat and now fit into size 32 jeans. The Whole30 eliminates all grains, carbs, legumes, sugar, poor quality oils, chips and alcohol. While I “cheat” now and then, it’s still easy to maintain my new weight.

Time Restricted Feeding (TRF): Rather than changing what you eat, you simply restrict food intake to a narrower time window. Most poor quality eating occurs at night, so putting aside the feedbag after 6 PM invariably helps you shed pounds.

Intermittent Fasting (IF): In the 5:2 plan, you eat normally for five days, then calorie restrict for two; Other schemes, like that of Dr. Valter Longo, incorporate a Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) for five days per month.

Ketogenic Diet: Drastically restricting carbs yields weight loss dividends, and can be helpful for neurological disorders as well as Type 2 diabetes.

Salad and Salmon Diet: A low-carb version of my own Salad and Salmon Diet, incorporating many features of the healthy Mediterranean Diet, has been a mainstay of my approach to weight loss over the years.

I recently had the pleasure of attending a phenomenal lecture at the Integrative Healthcare Symposium (IHS) co-presented by Drs. Jeffrey Bland and Leon Schurgers. Dr. Bland is widely acknowledged as the “Godfather of Functional Medicine”; Dr. Schurgers is a Dutch researcher who specializes in the relationship between vitamin K and coronary artery calcification (CAC).
Measurement of CAC is an accepted way of assessing risk for heart attack. Regardless of cholesterol, some people are highly prone—or resistant—to coronary artery disease. I use the “EBT heart scan” to more reliably predict which of my patients needs aggressive prevention versus those who can be reassured that they’re at low risk.
For example, because my cholesterol is a little high (around 210), and I’m a 65 year old male with a family history of heart disease, I’m told I’m an ideal candidate for a statin. But a recent heart scan revealed I had zero plaque—a virtual guarantee of an additional 15 years of trouble-free mileage. I have a patient with a cholesterol of 345 who paradoxically has no plaque; another, with a cholesterol of 190 has a high-risk plaque score of over 800.
So clearly there are factors beyond cholesterol, HDL, and LDL that determine risk.
One of those factors might be vitamin K.
Dr. Schurgers grew up in the Netherlands, a country renowned for its high-quality aged cheeses. Among Western countries, Holland is relatively low in incidence of heart disease, despite high consumption of full-fat dairy. This has led Schurgers to speculate that something in aged dairy products might be protective.
The Japanese have long touted the benefits of natto—fermented soy beans—a decidedly acquired taste for Western palates. Natto is the richest dietary source of menaquinone (MK7), a form of vitamin K2.
For those who can’t abide the pungent taste of natto, aged cheese is the second most potent source of MK7. It’s also available in supplements, and for years has been a mainstay in my preventive protocols for cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.
Why does MK7 have beneficial effects in such seemingly diverse conditions as atherosclerosis and bone loss? The answer, a bit simplistically, is that it acts kind of like a crossing guard for calcium: it keeps calcium away from places it shouldn’t be, and helps deposit it where it should be. The key to vitamin K’s actions in this regard is something called Matrix Gla protein (MGP).
So where does Coumadin fit in to this picture? Can coconut oil help fight yeast infections, including those in the mouth? When it comes to Candida albicans, the evidence suggests that the answer is “yes.”
Candida albicans is a species of yeast that naturally grows in the gut. Normally, it causes few problems, but disruptions can cause it to grow out of control.
For instance, when heavy use of antibiotics kills helpful bacteria along with the harmful, Candida can behave opportunistically to fill the void. People with compromised immune systems are also prone to problems with yeast overgrowth.
Such systemic yeast infections are known as candidiasis. In severe cases, the Candida can even invade the bloodstream. Candida infections of the blood are the fourth most common type found in US hospital patients.
Typically, candidiasis is fought with antifungal drugs. Yet these tend to be harsh and, of course, come with many side effects. Overuse also promotes the development of drug-resistant strains.
Enter coconut oil, long known for its antifungal properties.
According to a 2015 animal study in mSphere,

A coconut oil-rich diet reduced C. albicans in the gut compared to a beef tallow-or soybean oil-rich diet. Coconut oil alone, or the combination of coconut oil and beef tallow, reduced the amount of C. albicans in the gut by more than 90% compared to a beef tallow-rich diet.
“Coconut oil even reduced fungal colonization when mice were switched from beef tallow to coconut oil, or when mice were fed both beef tallow and coconut oil at the same time. These findings suggest that adding coconut oil to a patient’s existing diet might control the growth of C. albicans in the gut, and possibly decrease the risk of fungal infections caused by C. albicans,” said Kumamoto, Ph.D., a professor of molecular biology and microbiology at Tufts University School of Medicine and member of the molecular microbiology and genetics program faculties at the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences.

“Food can be a powerful ally in reducing the risk of disease,” added another of the study’s authors.
Controlling Candida growth in the mouth is vital to good health. Research has shown that the yeast works in tandem with the decay-causing bacteria S. mutans to create extra strong, extra sticky biofilms – a/k/a dental plaque. Both bacteria and yeast thrive, promoting tooth decay and gum disease.
Eating more coconut oil is one way you may be able to keep the yeast under control. Another is to use a coconut-oil based toothpaste. There are plenty of commercially available pastes, or you can make your own at home.
Then there’s oil pulling, which can help eliminate plaque, prevent bad breath, and reduce oral pathogens. Most folks start out swishing coconut oil throughout their mouth for short periods of time, but the ideal is 10 to 20 minutes. The oil pulls out harmful bacteria and debris from the teeth, becoming thin and milky in the process. Then you just spit it out into the trash (not down the drain, as the oil will solidify and clog it).
Oil pulling should be done at least once daily for two months to see noticeable results.
Do note, however, that if you have mercury amalgam fillings, you may want to think twice about oil pulling. Some have expressed concern that mercury naturally released from these fillings may be concentrated in the oil and ingested.
If you have amalgams – or if you have crowns or braces, or are pregnant or breastfeeding – consult your dentist before doing any pulling with coconut oil.
Otherwise, it’s a safe practice – and one that our patients often find very effective indeed.

The post From Mike Rehme’s Tooth Body Blog: Coconut oil and the yeast in your mouth first appeared on Alliance for Natural Health USA - Protecting Natural Health.

While fermented drinks can provide hard-to-get nutrients and probiotics, they do have one drawback: They all contain some degree of carbonation, and carbonation can do a number on your teeth.
Does the potential for harm outweigh the benefits of probiotic drinks? Let’s take a look at the issue in greater depth.
Carbonation is what makes fizzy drinks fizz. Carbon dioxide gas is dissolved within the liquid. When the drinks are opened and exposed to air, the gas is free to escape. As it does, it gathers to form the bubbles that so many of us enjoy.
The trouble is, a chemical reaction in your mouth turns the carbon dioxide into carbonic acid, and acid promotes demineralization. It eats away at the enamel that normally protects your teeth, eventually exposing the softer layer of dentin below and leaving your teeth more vulnerable to decay.
Sodas are among the worst culprits. Not only are they heavily carbonated, but they contain additional acids that are added to make them even zingier – phosphoric acid, for instance, or citric acid.
Full sugar sodas are even worse because the bacteria in your mouth feed off that sugar and make even more acid in the process. (This isn’t to recommend “diet” sodas, which are still acidic enough to damage your teeth.)
And the longer you take to sip a soda, the worse its effects become. Each sip exposes your teeth to an acid attack. Nursing a soda for hours will do more damage than drinking it in a few minutes.
Even plain sparkling water can be damaging if you drink enough of it, especially if you sip it constantly throughout the day.
Fermented drinks fall somewhere in between sodas and sparkling water, containing both carbonation and natural acids made during the fermentation process. These acids aren’t quite as strong as those in sodas, but they can still do a fair amount of damage if your teeth are exposed to them too much.
The key phrase there is “too much.” Most people can still get the benefits of fermented drinks while following the precautions that hold for soda, sparkling water, and other fizzy drinks:

Enjoy the drinks as a sometime thing, not something you guzzle throughout the day. Avoid them all together before bed.

When you do drink them, drink fast. Remember: The more your teeth are exposed to acids, the more damage those acids can do.

Use a straw to keep the acids from bathing your teeth.

Rinse your mouth with water afterwards to flush away any remaining acids (and sugars).

Wait at least a half hour before you brush. Allow time for the acids in your mouth to be neutralized. Otherwise, you’re just brushing them into your teeth, which can compound the damage.

But above all, practice moderation. Moderation is the key to getting the most benefits from fermented drinks with the least harm to your teeth.

The post From Mike Rehme’s Tooth Body Blog: Carbonation, fermented drinks and your teeth first appeared on Alliance for Natural Health USA - Protecting Natural Health.

Fatigue, allergies, joint aches or mood swings got you down? Although concern over the effects of pollution on the environment has held our attention for decades, new research is detecting chemical toxins in most people.[1;2] While industry furiously challenges the evidence, scientists argue that low-level chemical exposures are linked with these subtle but all too common problems, not to mention diseases such as autism, ADHD, and cancer, to name a few. Long term, low level exposures to chemicals cause an accumulation in the body referred to as “body burden.”
As we gain increasing understanding about the adverse effects of body burden on health what remains less clear is when the time bomb may go off. The medical community is trained to look to yesterday’s exposure to explain today’s symptoms. Yet, body burden, accumulations of toxic chemicals, may have more subtle but important health effects that are not seen for years, or even lifetimes. Because of this time delay, it is not uncommon for a chemical to be banned for safety concerns after decades of use — a real world experiment.
Studies link ZIP codes near waste sites with low-birth-weight babies, thyroid disease in women and female reproductive disorders such as endometriosis — even in regions with higher per capita income, less smoking, better diet and more exercise.[3] The same researchers have data linking living near waste sites to elevated risks for stroke, ischemic heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer.
Our life support system: Better living through chemistry?
You don’t live near an industrial waste site? The truth is that even if you do, you probably get most of your toxins as pesticides and additives in your food or each time you apply various consumer cosmetic products. Your home, your cars and even the water you drink slowly leak chemicals into your life.
There has been a staggering proliferation of toxic chemicals produced without due regard for testing for long-term health effects of low level exposures. Thousands of new synthetic chemicals come into manufactured consumer products every year with little to no safety testing or public approval process. According to the World Health Organization, there are over 100,000 synthetic chemicals in use in consumer products today with 1,000 to 2,000 being added to the list each year.
We breathe these chemicals through our lungs, absorb them through our skin and ingest them in the food we eat and water we drink. We are soaking up chemicals that we’d be hard-pressed to spell or pronounce, if we could even find out what they were.
The body burden problem
Toxic chemicals know no boundaries. Chemicals contaminate not only wildlife and the environment, but people, breast milk and the unborn child yet most people are unaware that they carry chemical compounds in their bodies. Each of us has some load of industrial chemicals stored in or passing through our bodies. Human fat tissue sampled in the United States contained 700 contaminants that have not been chemically identified.[4]
According to Michael McCally, M.D. Ph.D., of Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, “Current ‘normal’ body burdens of dioxin and several other well-studied organochlorides are at or near the range at which toxic effects occur in laboratory animals.” A recent Mt Sinai study found 167 chemicals in the blood and urine of volunteers; chemicals used in consumer products and found in industrial pollution.[2] Of the 167 chemicals discovered, 94 are toxic to the brain or nervous system, 76 are carcinogenic (cancer-causing) and 79 are linked to birth defects. None of the participants worked with chemicals or lived near an industrial facility. In other words, these toxins represent the average body burden of the ordinary American citizen.
This is not a uniquely American problem. A 2005 British study funded by the World Wide Fund for Nature and the Co-Operative Bank found chemicals including banned pesticides like DDT, flame retardants and the PFOA chemical found in Teflon and used on nonstick pans and stain repellents.
If the body burden of adults isn’t enough cause for alarm, it is shocking to learn the effects on future generations. In 2005, the US Environmental Working Group [5] reported that umbilical cord blood samples taken from newborn babies were all heavily contaminated. A total of 287 contaminants were detected. Many of these were known or suspected carcinogens, neurotoxins or linked with birth defects if present in high concentrations. Meanwhile, an exhaustive review of the evidence points to prenatal exposures as a source of postnatal mental deficits.[6]
Scientists have never assessed the effects of exposures to the endless combinations of chemicals found in people. One reason why measuring such effects is difficult is that these chemicals are persistent (meaning they do not break down) and bioaccumulative (meaning they tend to build up in living things, particularly areas of the body rich in fat such as fatty tissue, brain and other organs).
Our understanding of when a chemical is toxic is changing and concerned individuals are calling for laws to regulate these compounds more carefully. However, because of their widespread use, tendency to persist and accumulation in body tissues — especially fat — even regulatory changes will not remove them from our world very quickly.
While we wait for industry, government and science to reach agreement, the vast increase of chemicals in our environment, foods, cosmetics and medicines puts an enormous burden on our bodies’ natural abilities to break down and remove toxins. With the exception of certain minerals, these chemicals do not belong in the body. While minerals are needed at low levels for normal function, some are now found measured at high or even toxic concentrations.
Most people wait too long to do something about it
The good news is that something can be done about the toxins in our bodies. Our livers, lungs, kidneys are constantly working overtime to remove the onslaught of chemicals. To function properly, these systems require broad nutritional support. When we don’t give our body what it needs to help it eliminate these chemicals or when we expose it to more than it can handle, it just can’t keep up. Symptoms such as fatigue, aches, allergies, asthma, mood swings, foggy thinking, and more set in. Before this happens — and even afterwards — the correct detoxification program can make all the difference.
The Maulfair Medical Center uses the Hubbard method of detoxification, the most thorough and scientifically validated regimen available. This precise regimen combines exercise, sauna bathing, and vitamin and mineral supplementation to increase the elimination of chemicals while rebuilding and repairing your body. Its safety and effectiveness in treating a wide range of exposures have been established for more than two decades.[7;8]
Originally developed by Hubbard in 1979, this program has been successfully used to aid individuals exposed during large-scale environmental contaminations, including those resulting from the 2001 World Trade Center disaster [9] and the 1986 Chernobyl incident [10]. Thousands of people have enjoyed relief from symptoms caused by more gradual build-up of toxins.
Sauna detoxification at the Maulfair Medical Center
Dr. Maulfair gets you started on your sauna program with a thorough medical examination and a series of key tests plus a complete physical exam. Tests may include a pre and post assessment of toxic body burden and some tests may be repeated periodically, to monitor your status while on the regimen.
Dr. Maulfair has over thirty years experience utilizing detoxification regimens to treat chronic disease. Join those clients of the Maulfair Medical Center’s program who have gained back their quality of life, enjoy restored energy, clear thinking, motivation and an overall sense of well being. Comment: We’ve had our differences with Sen. McCain, most notably his introduction of legislation that would have given the FDA more power over the supplement industry, but we wish him well in his treatment. We also wish that the senator would consider integrative treatments for his glioblastoma. Even with surgery and chemotherapy, patients with this type of brain cancer are generally given about 15 months to live. This might be because mounting evidence shows that chemotherapy and radiation don’t produce any significant improvements in cancer survival rates, because cancer stem cells are resistant to these treatments. This means, tragically, that patients like Sen. McCain are put through the misery of chemo for little benefit. Meanwhile, many natural compounds like turmeric have demonstrated the ability to attack cancers at their root; the only problem is that turmeric is cheap and natural. We see this happen too often in modern medicine: cheap, natural medicine is neglected in favor of expensive treatments and patented drugs that make hospitals and pharmaceutical companies rich.

The post Senator McCain’s Cancer Treatment Reveals the Problem first appeared on Alliance for Natural Health USA - Protecting Natural Health.

Everyone knows that sleep is important, but did you know that it can impact your weight?
If you’re trying to drop a few pounds, maybe you should think about your pillow. While sleeping doesn’t take away the benefit of eating healthy and exercise, it does play a key role in the management of your body weight.
Several long term studies have been conducted to look at the impact of sleep on your weight. These studies found that inadequate sleep was associated with higher weight in children and adults. In adults, studies found that sleep and the intake of sugar and caffeine were inversely related (the less you sleep, the more likely you are to reach for those donuts and coffee). These studies also found that the less you sleep, the more likely you are to eat or snack at late night hours, and more likely to choose sweet or salty snacks. These late night snacks can impact your metabolism and predispose you to weight gain.
When looking at children and sleep habits (even when other factors including parental obesity, TV time, and physical activity are removed from the equation), children who don’t sleep enough are more likely to be obese. Some factors that can impact your infant’s sleep include the introduction of solids before 4 months of age and infant TV viewing. Childhood sleep habits may also have a long-term impact on adult weight. One study showed that each hour reduction in sleep resulted in a 50% higher risk of obesity by early 30s in adulthood. Early US trials are showing some positive impact on teaching new parents ways to develop good sleep and feeding habits in their newborn and the prevention of obesity during toddler years.
Sleep is so important regardless of the lifestage, with more and more reasearch showing it’s impact on your weight throughout your life.

So how does your sleep actually impact your body weight?

Sleep alters hunger hormones. The less sleep you get the higher those hunger hormones become and the lower your satiety hormones become. This can cause you to crave fatty and carbohydrate rich foods. It will also prevent you from being satisfied when you do eat enough.

You have more time to eat. The more time you have to eat, the more likely you are going to consume more calories during your awake hours.

You’re more likely to snack more. Less sleep is associated with more snacking.

You may make less healthy choices. Studies are showing that those who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to eat out and have irregular meal patterns (hello drive through?).

Decreased physical activity. How many of you feel like going to the gym when you are fighting to stay awake during the day? Studies are showing people who don’t have enough sleep are more likely to watch TV instead of doing physical activity. This will also allow you to pack on the pounds.

Lower body temperature. People who are sleep deprived tend to have a lower body temperature which results in a lower amount of calories your body needs.

Ideal sleep should be between seven to eight hours a night for adults. Recent research shows only about 26% of American adults are getting enough sleep at night. How is your sleep?

The post By ICIM member Valeska Wells, DO: Sleep matters first appeared on Alliance for Natural Health USA - Protecting Natural Health.
